Dry Eye

Who Can Get It and What Are the Symptoms?

We have all experienced an occasional scratchy or gritty sensation in our eyes, especially in windy weather or after long periods of reading. We blink rapidly and tears drench our irritated eyes with cleansing relief. For those who suffer from chronic dry eye, that irritation never goes away. Dr. Najib Albina and his experienced staff here at Eye Care Center Limited in Addison understands the havoc dry eye can wreak and are ready to help.

What is Dry Eye?

Normally, eyes are bathed by tears, cleansing and protecting our eyes. Dry eye is a problem with the way our eyes generate those tears. Either your eyes no longer make enough tears to do the job adequately, or the tears you do produce are no longer of a quality that can protect your eyes.

What are the Symptoms of Dry Eye and Who Can Develop It?

The most common symptom is a gritty scratchy feeling, which worsens when we rub our eyes to gain relief. Other symptoms include:

  • Tired eyes
  • Itchy sensation
  • Redness

While any family member is at risk for dry eye, you are at greater risk of developing the disorder if you:

  • Work in a dry or windy environment
  • Spend prolonged hours on computers
  • Have a relative that has the disorder
  • Are older, as tear production decreases as we age
  • Take certain medications like, antihistamines, anti-depressants, blood pressure meds

How is Dry Eye Diagnosed and Treated?

Dr. Albina will perform a comprehensive eye examination, which includes a discussion of your overall health, family history and any symptoms you are experiencing.

Once a diagnosis of dry eye has been made, treatment depends on the underlying cause of the disorder. You may require:

  • Eye drops to increase your own tear production
  • Eye drops that add preservative-free tears to your eye
  • Tear duct plugs
  • Antibiotics to treat an infection caused by dry eye

Dr. Albina and his capable, multi-lingual staff here at Eye Care Center Limited, your optometry office in Addison, are ready to help you and your family. Call today 630-543-0607
