Cataracts in Babies

Cataracts in Babies

Cataracts are something we often associate with the elderly, but anyone can develop cataracts – even babies. If you believe that your baby may have cataracts, Eye Care Center LTD is ready to assist you. Our optometrist has years of experience identifying and addressing cataracts for patients in Addison, Burbank, and the surrounding areas.

What Are Cataracts?

When the lens of the eye becomes clouded, it is known as a cataract. This clouding of the lens impairs vision, distorts light, and makes daily life difficult. Many people equate cataracts with looking through a fogged-up window. Most cataracts are partial, but some may be complete and affect all areas of vision. Cataracts can occur in one eye (unilateral) or both eyes (bilateral). Cataracts are painless, yet they make life difficult in many other ways.

Cataracts in Babies

It's important to catch cataracts early so that the patient can get treatment before the condition gets worse. In babies, cataracts can cause visual impairment even blindness if left unaddressed. There are a few factors that can result in a baby having cataracts. The first is genetics. Some babies have a strong family history of this eye condition. Another factor is the mother getting certain infections while pregnant. A baby having a low birth weight also puts him or her at a higher risk for cataracts. Down's syndrome and other chromosomal disorders can also increase a baby’s chances of developing cataracts.

Signs of Cataracts

Because babies can't complain about their vision, it's up to those around them to watch for signs of cataracts. One way to test your baby is to point a flashlight at both of the baby's eyes. If the pupil is white, there may be a cataract in that eye. Also, watch for any misalignment of your baby's eyes or a wandering eye. Your child may also scowl when the light is bright outdoors or even try to shield his eyes.
