4 Eye Care Habits to Increase Your Vision Health

Having good eye habits can reduce your chances of getting an eye infection, injury or disease and increase your overall vision health.

Performing healthy eye habits at an early age is the best way to protect your eyes and prevent eye damage over your lifetime. But even if you’re a senior, adult or adolescent, it’s never too late to start having good eye habits.

4 key eye habits to perform are:

Wear eye protection.

Whether you’re walking outside on a warm sunny day, playing sports, gardening or using chemicals, it’s important to protect your eyes from the sun, flying objects, tools and hazardous materials. Sunglasses and goggles will help prevent eye injuries.

Keep your eyes clean.

Always wash your hands before touching your eyes. If you put anything in or around your eyes (contacts, makeup, etc.) make sure it is clean and new. It’s important to throw away old contacts and makeup and not share contacts and makeup with others.

Do not rub your eyes.

When you feel like there’s something in your eye it’s instinctive to rub it out, but go against your instincts here. Rubbing your eye can make it worse and you may even scratch your eyeball or the sclera (white area of the eye). The best way to get something out of your eye is to flush it out with water.

Give your eyes a break.

People spend more time in front of a screen these days. From televisions and computers to tablets and mobile devices, adults and kids alike are constantly looking at some type of screen. It’s important to keep a safe distance from any device you’re looking at and give your eyes a break when looking at a screen for long periods of time. Follow the 20-20-20 rule—take a break every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds by looking at something that is 20 feet away—when you need to briefly rest your eyes from a screen.

Practicing these eye care habits will improve your vision health and increase your eye safety from injury and disease. Of course, not all eye problems can be prevented so it’s essential to get regular eye checkups by a professional optometrist and get any changes to your vision during off times checked out as well. Contact us for more information about healthy eye care habits or to schedule an eye appointment.
