Dry Eye

Dry Eye Treatment at Eye Care Center Limited IN Addison & Burbank

There many kinds of problems that can threaten both the comfort and the health of your eyes -- and not all of them are as ominous-sounding as glaucoma or macular degeneration. A syndrome known as dry eye may sound more like a minor annoyance than a major issue, but this abnormality in your tear film can cause severe discomfort as well as potential damage. Fortunately, you can get the dry eye treatment you need here at Eye Care Center Limited in Burbank.

Dry Eye and Its Possible Causes

Ideally, the eyes are constantly covered by a substance known as the tear film. Tears are produced as a collaborative effort between the tear glands (which produce mucous and water) and the meibomian glands of the eyelids (which produce oil). Every time you blink, all three of these ingredients come together in a multi-layered arrangement to create a tear film over the front of the eyes. The tear film protects the eyes against disease and keeps the eyes hydrated (with the oil layer preventing evaporation).

If you can't make enough tears, or your tear film is lacking in oil, you cannot maintain this protective coating. This can result in symptoms such as redness, light sensitivity, pain, a feeling of fatigue or heaviness in the eyes, and blurry vision. Over time, extended dryness can allow the delicate corneal tissues to suffer illness or injury, which may result in scarring.

  • Dry eye can stem from a wide range of causes. Your dry eye may be caused by:
  • Regular wind or fan exposure
  • Infrequent blinking due to overuse of computer monitors
  • Age
  • Medications
  • Health conditions that promote dryness
  • Meibomian gland dysfunction or blockage

Detection and Treatment From Our Eye Doctor

Our eye doctor, Dr. Albina, can confirm a case of dry eye by examining your tear film composition, eyelids, and corneas, taking into account your symptoms, medical history, medication list, lifestyle, and other contributing factors. We can then treat the underlying condition behind your dry eye. Your eyes may respond well to eye drops or changes in the way you're being treated for a health problem. We may also recommend that you protect you against wind and/or take more frequent breaks from the computer. If a meibomian gland issue is a problem, we may administer treatments to get the oil flowing again.
