Tips for Caring for Your Contact Lenses

Vision is an important part of our daily lives. Thus, you should never slack on important eye care. This is especially true for people who wear contact lenses. People that wear lenses are constantly touching their eyes when they are removing contacts, putting them in again, or checking to see if there is something that has caused irritation. In order to reduce the chances of eye infections, injury, or disease we recommend the following tips for caring for your contact lenses:

Always Wash Your Hands
Putting in contacts means touching your lenses, and your eyes, with your hands. As we all learned from an early age, our hands carry a lot of germs. Throughout the day we touch thousands of surfaces that may not have been recently cleaned. That’s why it’s essential to properly wash and dry your hands prior to handling your contacts. Use antibacterial soap without perfumes, oil, or lotions since these types of soap can cause irritation on your eyes.

Clean Your Contacts
Cleaning your contacts regularly will help extend their life as well as help you practice safe eye care. In order to do this, take your contact and gently rub each one between your fingers. Then rinse your contacts thoroughly with your contact solution to wash off any debris. Keep them submerged in your solution overnight to avoid drying out or picking up any new dirt.

Utilize Proper Storage
When you store your clean contacts overnight, make sure that your case is clean. Let it air dry each time you clean it. It is important to change your case every 90 days so that your contacts stay in a clean case without bacteria buildup.

Replace Your Contacts as Needed
If your contacts are daily lenses, throw them away after wearing them for one day. If they are monthly or quarterly, throw them away after that period. By following the guidelines of the replacement schedules you will reduce your chance of eye infections, irritations, or injury.

Use the Right Solutions
Not all solutions are created equally. In some occasions, there are solutions that do not work with specific types of contact lenses. Usually your contacts will specify any solutions to avoid. You can also always talk with your optometrist to be on the safe side.

These tips will help you not only extend the life of your contacts, but will increase your eye safety overall. Make sure you always get regular checkups so you can adjust your lenses in case of any vision changes. Contact us for more information about contact lenses or to schedule an eye exam.
