What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular degeneration is what happens when part of your eye known as the macula gets damaged. The two types of this condition are wet AMD and dry AMD. The dry type is more common and is related to aging. Dry AMD happens when your eye's macula becomes thinner as you get older and typically progresses gradually over several years.
On the other hand, wet AMD is less common and leads to quick vision loss. Wet AMD happens due to abnormal blood vessels growing in the back part of your eye and damaging the macula. Thankfully, you can get treatment for wet AMD.
Treatment
The treatment you will get depends on the type and stage of AMD that you have. Treatment for early-stage AMD does not exist. As a result, your eye doctor will perform regular eye exams to remain informed about the condition of your eyes. As far as wet AMD goes, our eye doctor can provide treatment like photodynamic therapy and anti-VEGF drugs that they inject into your eye.
